In October 2006, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Lakeview Resource Area implemented a prescribed fire at the SageSTEP Walker Butte woodland site in Oregon. The 45-acre burn was successful. In the spring of 2006 the Lakeview BLM fire crew had cut one third of the trees within the plot and had girdled those that were left standing. This resulted in nearly 100% tree mortality after the fire. The lack of herbaceous fuel on the ground made it difficult to get the fire to carry across the plot and resulted in a mosaic of burned grass patches, which the fire crew returned later to ignite.
